If you look it up in Oxford’s dictionary you will find it. It was added in 2010 along with a slew of other words once considered slang. Look up faux pas in fashion’s dictionary and you would have stumbled upon the phrase next to it as well. I’m talking about, Matchy-Matchy – an adjective Informal – meaning: very or excessively color-coordinated. “the key to looking stylish is to avoid an outfit that's too matchy-matchy”. Until a few years ago being too coordinated was viewed as a misstep as American culture embraced the less is more mantra. However, today the “more is more” lifestyle has permeated through the fashion world and has taken on many forms beyond just color cramming.
From head-to-toe patterning and prints to layering up in one color or fabric, the concept of matchy- matchy has been expanded upon and has become fashions fresh new step. Several years back Whistles former CEO, Jane Sheperdson said, “Sometimes fashion has to reintroduce an idea that may have once been considered bad taste”. The great thing about this once faux pas is that it has more benefits then just being en vogue.
For one its easy. It requires no mulling over about what top or bottom you need to complete the look. The color, style, and fabric is laid out before you. It gives more time to focus on other things like tracking your uber and wondering why they decided to take busiest street to you...Smh.
Secondly, it makes a statement. When you see matchy-matchy coming your way on the street you have no choice but to take notice. Because the focus isn’t in one area but the whole look, you are sure to get gawkers and people watchers staring a bit longer than usual.
Last but definitely not least; it has an elongating effect. Because the matchy-matchy look gives the appearance of a one piece outfit, it has a slimming and lengthening impact on the eyes. My look by Hellessy gave some the impression that it was a jumpsuit when in fact it was two pieces. The one piece illusion draws the eyes vertically starting from the spaghetti straps of the top all the way down to the widening flair trouser.
This fall season it will be tough to avoid outfits that are too matchy-matchy because it will be one this seasons unavoidable looks. Hope you like my matchy-matchy look:) -Slightly Flirty c/o Gina Papa xoxo
