I think of myself as an old soul and routinely find a yearning for the days of future past (X-men reference). Where you sold, did and acted anyway you wanted to in NYC and no one could tell you anything. Once upon a time you could smoke anywhere indoors, buy a 14k gold cuban link chain off the street, and brown paper bag your beer to the next underground club. You can try any of these feats today but see how fast you get a ticket, or better yet get arrested. My how times have changed!
With the myriad of regulations governing New York City today you find yourself walking through a town that tells you you can be anything you want to be as long as it’s within the confines of its rules. For this shoot I wanted to go back into time, to a place that felt gritty but had character, where people didn’t necessarily like the filth and hustle they lived around, but it was theirs and so it had its charm. I hope you enjoy my trip to the past, a place I call my Now-stalgia:) -xx
